Acne Treatment in Ormskirk

Acne can affect people of different ages and can sometimes be difficult to control with skincare products alone. At The Clocktower Pharmacy in Ormskirk, our pharmacist can assess your acne, discuss treatments you have already tried and help determine an appropriate next step. Where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment may be available following consultation.

Private consultation • Pharmacist-led • Personalised treatment • Prescription treatment where appropriate

Is Your Acne Not Improving?

Mild acne may sometimes respond to appropriate pharmacy and skincare treatments. Further assessment may be worthwhile when:

  • Acne is persistent or pharmacy treatments have not helped
  • Spots are becoming more inflamed or affect the face, chest or back
  • There is concern about scarring
  • Acne is affecting confidence or wellbeing

Acne Can Look Different for Different People

Acne can include blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules and, in some cases, nodules or cysts. Severity and treatment requirements vary. Website descriptions cannot diagnose the type or severity of acne; the pharmacist will assess your individual presentation.

How Does the Acne Consultation Work?

  1. 1

    Book

    Arrange a private pharmacist consultation.

  2. 2

    Assessment

Our pharmacist will ask about your acne, how long you have had it, areas affected, previous treatments, relevant medical history and medicines.

  3. 3

    Treatment plan

We will discuss appropriate treatment options based on your individual presentation.

  4. 4

    Follow-up

Acne treatment often takes time. You will receive advice about treatment use, skin care, expected response and when further assessment may be necessary.

Acne Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and severity of acne and what has already been tried. Options may include benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoid-containing treatments, topical antibiotic-containing combinations, azelaic acid, or oral antibiotic treatment for appropriate presentations. Our pharmacist will recommend or prescribe treatment based on your acne, previous treatments, medical history and current clinical guidance.

Do I Need Antibiotics for Acne?

Antibiotics are not appropriate for every case of acne. Where an oral antibiotic such as lymecycline is clinically appropriate, it should form part of an appropriate treatment plan and be used in line with antimicrobial stewardship principles. Treatment should be reviewed appropriately; this page is not an invitation to request antibiotics.

When Should I Expect Improvement?

Acne treatment does not normally work overnight. It may take several weeks before meaningful improvement is seen, and consistency with the agreed treatment plan is important. Responses vary and clear skin cannot be guaranteed.

Looking After Acne-Prone Skin

  • Cleanse gently and avoid excessive washing.
  • Avoid picking or squeezing spots.
  • Choose suitable non-comedogenic products where possible.
  • Ask the pharmacist how to use skincare alongside any acne treatment.

Concerned About Acne Scarring?

More severe or persistent inflammatory acne can increase the risk of scarring. Seek assessment rather than waiting indefinitely if acne is worsening or causing scars. Some patients may need GP or dermatology referral; this service does not treat established acne scars.

When Might You Need Your GP or a Dermatologist?

Some acne presentations require further medical assessment, including severe acne, significant nodules or cysts, scarring or risk of significant scarring, diagnostic uncertainty, failure to respond to appropriate treatment, significant psychological distress, or treatments outside the pharmacy's prescribing scope. Isotretinoin requires specialist management and is not routinely available through this pharmacy service.

Acne and Women's Health

Acne can sometimes be influenced by hormonal factors. An appropriate consultation can consider contraception, pregnancy possibility and other factors that may affect treatment choice. Hormonal acne cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Pregnancy & Acne Treatment

Some commonly used acne treatments are unsuitable during pregnancy or when pregnancy is possible. The pharmacist will establish relevant pregnancy information before prescribing where this affects suitability. Do not self-select treatment based on this page.
