Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus and commonly affect the lips or surrounding skin. An outbreak can begin with tingling, itching or burning before characteristic blisters develop. Cold sores usually resolve, but treatment may be useful for some people. Not every lip lesion is a cold sore, so assessment is important where symptoms are uncertain.
Some cold sore treatments are most useful when started early. If you recognise your usual symptoms, seek pharmacist advice promptly rather than waiting several days. Starting early does not guarantee an outbreak will be stopped or shortened.
Book a Cold Sore ConsultationOur pharmacist will discuss your symptoms, when they started, previous cold sores, relevant medical conditions and medicines.
We will assess whether your symptoms appear suitable for management through the pharmacy service.
Appropriate pharmacy or prescription treatment options will be discussed.
We will explain how to use treatment and when further medical assessment is needed.
Treatment depends on the individual presentation and timing. Options may include topical antiviral treatments, symptom-relief measures and oral antiviral prescription treatment for clinically appropriate patients. Information about medicines such as aciclovir is educational only; our pharmacist will determine whether prescription antiviral treatment is appropriate following an individual clinical assessment.
Through the pharmacy’s private prescribing service, prescription treatment may be available where clinically appropriate. It is not guaranteed, and the pharmacist will consider your symptoms, medical history and current medicines before deciding on a suitable next step. Medicine-specific dosing, duration, contraindications, kidney considerations and interactions require individual professional assessment against current UK prescribing information.
Cold sores are contagious and the virus can pass to other people. Avoid kissing while a cold sore is active, sharing items that have contacted the affected area, or touching the sore unnecessarily. Wash your hands carefully, especially after touching the area. Follow current NHS advice and avoid kissing newborn babies when you have an active cold sore.
Herpes infection can be particularly serious in newborn babies. If you have an active cold sore, follow current NHS advice about contact with newborns and do not kiss a baby.
Sores around the mouth can have different causes. Further assessment may be needed when the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms are unusually severe, lesions are widespread, the area around the eye is affected, symptoms are not healing as expected, you are significantly immunocompromised or other concerning symptoms are present.
Herpes infection involving the eye can require urgent medical assessment. Seek urgent appropriate medical advice if you have eye pain, significant redness, visual changes, light sensitivity or suspected herpes infection involving the eye. Do not rely on a routine private-treatment booking for these symptoms.
The virus remains in the body and cold sores can recur. Possible triggers vary between individuals. A pharmacist can help you discuss your pattern of symptoms and appropriate evidence-based next steps; do not rely on supplements or alternative products as proven prevention.
