Hay fever symptoms can range from mild to troublesome and may interfere with sleep, work, studying and outdoor activities. Symptoms can include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, an itchy nose or throat, itchy red or watery eyes, cough where relevant, and tiredness caused by disrupted symptoms or sleep. Not every nasal symptom is hay fever, so an assessment may be helpful.
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. Tree, grass and weed pollens can be more prominent at different times of year. Seasonal patterns vary, so this page does not provide a local pollen calendar.
Many people start with pharmacy medicines, but symptoms may remain poorly controlled because a treatment may not target their main symptoms, more than one treatment type may be appropriate, nasal treatments may not be used correctly, eye symptoms may need separate treatment, or a different approach may be needed. If your usual treatment is not working well enough, our pharmacist can review what you have tried and help determine an appropriate next step.

We will discuss your symptoms, when they occur, severity, treatments already tried, medicines and relevant medical history.
We will recommend an appropriate treatment approach based on your individual symptoms.
You will receive advice about using treatment correctly and what to do if symptoms remain uncontrolled.
Different symptoms may respond to different approaches. Oral antihistamines may help sneezing, itching and a runny nose in appropriate patients. Nasal treatments may be useful where nasal symptoms are prominent, and appropriate eye drops can help allergy eye symptoms. Where symptoms remain troublesome despite appropriate treatment, additional prescription options may be considered following clinical assessment. Treatments are selected for individual symptoms; prescription treatment is not automatically stronger or better.
Book a Hay Fever ConsultationCorrect technique and regular use where directed can make an important difference. In general, follow the product instructions, use a gentle sniff rather than a hard inhale, and aim away from the centre of the nose. The pharmacist can show you suitable technique and help you use treatment correctly without providing a medicine-specific dosing plan here.
Pollen and allergy symptoms can sometimes coincide with worsening asthma symptoms. If you have increased wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness or need your reliever medicine more often, seek appropriate clinical assessment. This hay fever service does not replace asthma review or emergency treatment; seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty.
Hives, significant skin reactions, or reactions after food or medicines may represent a different allergy problem. For suspected severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, call 999 immediately.
View Allergy TreatmentSeek GP or other healthcare assessment for significant breathing symptoms, poorly controlled asthma, persistent symptoms despite appropriate treatment, diagnostic uncertainty, symptoms suggesting another condition, or significant deterioration. The pharmacist will advise when another care route is appropriate.
