Pharmacy First in Ormskirk: 7 Conditions Your Pharmacist Can Help With

The NHS Pharmacy First service allows pharmacists to assess and treat seven common conditions without you needing a GP appointment. Here is what the service covers and how to access it at Clocktower Pharmacy in Ormskirk.

What is NHS Pharmacy First?

NHS Pharmacy First is a service that allows trained community pharmacists to assess, advise on and — where appropriate — supply prescription-only medicines for seven common conditions. The service launched across England in 2024 and is available at Clocktower Pharmacy in Ormskirk.

You do not need a GP referral to use Pharmacy First. You can walk in, call the pharmacy, or be referred by NHS 111 or your GP practice.

The 7 conditions covered by Pharmacy First

The following conditions can be assessed and treated under the NHS Pharmacy First service. Age eligibility criteria apply to some conditions.

1. Sinusitis

For adults and children aged 12 and over. Sinusitis causes pain and pressure around the nose, cheeks and eyes, often following a cold. A pharmacist can assess your symptoms and advise on treatment.

2. Sore throat

For adults and children aged 5 and over. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and clear on their own, but a pharmacist can assess whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

3. Earache

For children aged 1 to 17. Earache in children is common and often caused by ear infections. A pharmacist can assess the ear and advise on appropriate treatment.

4. Infected insect bite

For adults and children aged 1 and over. If an insect bite becomes infected, a pharmacist can assess the bite and provide appropriate treatment where needed.

5. Impetigo

For adults and children aged 1 and over. Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that causes sores and blisters. A pharmacist can assess and supply appropriate treatment.

6. Shingles

For adults aged 18 and over. Shingles causes a painful rash and is caused by the same virus as chickenpox. Early antiviral treatment can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.

7. Urinary tract infection (UTI)

For women aged 16 to 64. UTIs cause pain or burning when urinating and a frequent need to urinate. A pharmacist can assess your symptoms and supply appropriate treatment where clinically appropriate.
