Treatment based on your symptoms and previous treatment experience.
Some headaches need urgent medical assessment rather than a routine migraine consultation. Call 999 for a sudden, extremely severe headache, headache with new weakness, facial drooping or speech difficulty, confusion, loss of consciousness, or other severe neurological symptoms. Seek urgent NHS 111, urgent care or emergency assessment for headache after significant head injury, a major change from your usual pattern, severe illness, persistent vomiting, or concerning new visual symptoms.
General health · Private pharmacist consultation
Migraines can disrupt work, study, family life and everyday activities. If your usual pain relief is not controlling your migraines, our pharmacist can assess your symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment options. Where clinically appropriate, prescription migraine treatment may be available following consultation.
Private consultation • Pharmacist-led • Local care • Prescription options where appropriate
Migraine varies between individuals and not every severe headache is migraine. Features can include moderate to severe headache, often throbbing or pulsating pain, nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and symptoms made worse by normal activity. Some people have aura. An assessment is needed before deciding on the cause of a headache.
Some people experience temporary neurological symptoms before or during migraine, including visual, sensory, or speech and language symptoms. New, unusual or persistent neurological symptoms need appropriate medical assessment. Do not assume first-time neurological symptoms are migraine aura.
Arrange a private pharmacist consultation.
We will discuss your headache pattern, symptoms, frequency, previous diagnosis or treatments, medical history and medicines.
Where appropriate for pharmacist management, we will discuss suitable treatment options.
You will receive advice about treatment use, monitoring migraines and when further assessment may be required.
Treatment depends on your symptoms, previous treatment and clinical history. An appropriate approach may include simple pain relief, anti-inflammatory treatment where suitable, triptan treatment for clinically appropriate patients, anti-sickness treatment where appropriate, or combinations consistent with current guidance. Our pharmacist will assess your migraine symptoms and discuss an appropriate treatment approach based on current clinical guidance. Prescription treatment is not automatically stronger or better.
Triptans are migraine-specific medicines used to treat migraine attacks in appropriate patients. Sumatriptan is one example. They are not suitable for everyone, and suitability depends on medical history and other medicines. Any prescribing decision, including dosing, repeat doses, interactions and contraindications, requires individual assessment against current UK prescribing information.
Repeatedly taking different painkillers without reviewing the overall migraine treatment plan may not be the best approach. A pharmacist consultation can review what you have tried, how effective it was, how quickly treatment was taken, nausea or vomiting, frequency of attacks, other medicines, and whether a migraine-specific treatment may be appropriate.
Book a Migraine ConsultationFrequent use of acute headache or migraine medicines can itself contribute to medication-overuse headache. If you regularly rely on acute migraine medication, speak with a pharmacist, GP or other appropriate clinician about a safe review. Individual advice is important rather than relying on a general threshold.
Triggers vary and are not always identifiable. Possible factors can include stress, changes in sleep, missed meals, dehydration, alcohol for some people, hormonal changes and other individual triggers. A headache or migraine diary can sometimes help identify patterns. Do not begin restrictive diets without appropriate advice.
Some people experience migraines associated with hormonal changes. Migraine history, particularly migraine with aura, can be clinically relevant when considering certain contraceptive methods. This page cannot provide personalised contraception recommendations; ask for individual assessment.
Seek appropriate assessment for sudden severe headache, new neurological symptoms, a major change from your usual headache pattern, increasing frequency or severity, persistent vomiting, severe systemic illness, headache after significant injury, new headaches in circumstances requiring additional investigation, or diagnostic uncertainty. Call 999 for emergency symptoms; NHS 111, urgent care, GP or another service may be suitable for less immediate concerns.
Frequent or disabling migraines may need further assessment for preventive treatment or investigation rather than repeatedly treating individual attacks. The pharmacist can advise when GP or other healthcare review is appropriate. Preventive treatments are not assumed to be available through this private service.
