If your period is due during a holiday, wedding, sporting event or other important occasion, period delay treatment may be an option. Book a confidential consultation with our pharmacist at The Clocktower Pharmacy in Ormskirk to discuss whether treatment is suitable for you. Where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment may be supplied following assessment.

Prescription medication can sometimes be used to temporarily postpone menstruation. Whether it is suitable depends on an individual clinical assessment.
Treatment needs to be started at an appropriate time before an expected period and taken exactly as directed by the prescriber. Timing matters, so seek advice in advance rather than waiting until a period has started.
Period-delay treatment may include a prescription medicine such as norethisterone where it is clinically suitable. Our pharmacist will explain when treatment should be started, how it should be taken and what to expect when treatment is stopped. The individual consultation—not this page—determines whether a medicine is appropriate.
Period-delay medication generally needs to be started before the expected period. If you are planning for a holiday, wedding, religious or cultural event, sporting event or another important occasion, arrange a consultation sufficiently in advance. An early appointment does not guarantee that treatment will be suitable.

The pharmacist will ask about your menstrual cycle, relevant medical history, medicines and other clinical factors.
The pharmacist will assess whether period-delay treatment is safe and appropriate for you.
Where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment may be prescribed or supplied with clear counselling about how to use it.
Period-delay medication is not appropriate for everybody. The clinical assessment considers individual factors including pregnancy possibility; personal or family history relevant to blood clots; certain cardiovascular conditions; liver disease; unexplained vaginal bleeding; relevant migraine history; other medical conditions; and current medicines. This is not a self-screening checklist. If treatment is not suitable, our pharmacist will explain why and advise on appropriate next steps.
Period-delay treatment should not be relied on to prevent pregnancy. If contraception is required, speak to our pharmacy team about the appropriate contraception service. Emergency contraception is a separate time-sensitive service.
Individual responses can vary after period-delay treatment is stopped. The pharmacist will explain what to expect for the medicine prescribed. Contact an appropriate healthcare professional if you have concerns or if your period does not return as expected, especially if pregnancy is possible.
Like all medicines, period-delay treatment can cause side effects and has important warnings. The pharmacist will discuss relevant possible effects, interactions and precautions before any treatment is supplied. Seek urgent medical help for symptoms that could indicate a serious reaction, such as sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or severe unusual headache.
If you are travelling, arrange any period-delay consultation sufficiently in advance. Our Travel Clinic can also help with travel vaccinations, malaria prevention and destination-specific health advice.
