Which Vaccinations Might I Need for India?

There is no single vaccine list for every traveller. Recommendations can depend on regions visited, urban or rural travel, duration, accommodation, activities, food and water or animal exposure, medical history, age, previous vaccines, visiting friends and relatives, and additional countries. We use current authoritative UK travel-health guidance for an individual assessment.

Start With Your Routine Vaccinations

Routine UK vaccinations should be reviewed as part of travel preparation, before destination-specific options are considered. Bring any vaccination history you have so we can discuss it in the context of your trip.

Vaccinations That May Be Considered for India

Current UK travel-health guidance and your individual assessment may indicate consideration of the following options. They are not required by every traveller.

Hepatitis A

Protects against a viral infection generally acquired through contaminated food or water. It may be relevant depending on itinerary, prior vaccination and individual risk.

Typhoid

Protects against a bacterial infection associated with contaminated food or water. Consideration can depend on travel style, destination and likely exposure.

Hepatitis B

Protects against a virus spread through blood and body fluids. Longer stays, certain activities, healthcare exposure and other individual risks can matter.

Rabies

Protects against a serious infection transmitted through animal bites, scratches and certain exposures. Duration, activities and access to medical care are relevant.

Japanese encephalitis

Protects against a mosquito-borne viral infection. Rural exposure, destination, season, accommodation, activities and duration can affect consideration.

Hepatitis A and Travel to India

Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water. A travel-health assessment can consider how your itinerary, food and water exposure, previous vaccines and personal circumstances affect the advice you need.

Do I Need a Typhoid Vaccine for India?

Typhoid is generally acquired through contaminated food or water. Whether vaccination is appropriate depends on individual risk and current guidance. It does not replace sensible food, water and hand-hygiene precautions.

Visiting Friends or Family in India?

Visits with friends or family can involve longer stays, residential areas, more meals in local homes or settings, rural travel, spontaneous plans or animal exposure. Even if you have travelled to India many times before, it is worth reviewing your travel-health requirements before your next trip.

Do I Need Malaria Tablets for India?

Malaria recommendations can vary by area, itinerary, time of year where relevant, medical factors and current guidance. Do not assume tablets are either needed or unnecessary for every trip: bring your detailed itinerary for a personalised assessment.

Malaria Prevention Is More Than Tablets

Where antimalarial medication is recommended, bite prevention remains important. Use an appropriate insect repellent, wear suitable clothing, use sleeping or accommodation protection and take prescribed medicines exactly as advised. Fever or illness during travel or after returning needs prompt medical assessment and your travel history should be mentioned.

Protect Yourself From Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes can transmit illnesses other than malaria, including dengue. Practical bite avoidance matters in India, including during daytime activities: use an appropriate repellent, cover up where practical and reduce exposure in accommodation.

Rabies and Animal Bites in India

Avoid unnecessary contact with dogs, cats, monkeys, bats and other mammals. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination may be considered according to duration, activities, animal exposure, rural travel and access to appropriate medical care. Pre-travel vaccination does not remove the need for urgent medical assessment after a bite, scratch or other significant exposure.

Bitten or Scratched While Travelling?

Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek appropriate medical advice promptly while abroad. Do not wait until returning to the UK. A clinician must assess the exposure and any post-exposure treatment required.

Do I Need Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination for India?

This vaccine is not necessarily appropriate for every visitor. An assessment considers destination, rural exposure, length of stay, season, activities and accommodation alongside current guidance.

Eating and Drinking Safely in India

Enjoy local food while using practical precautions: clean hands regularly, choose drinking water carefully, consider food preparation and stay alert to dehydration. Vaccination does not remove food and water risks. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, bloody, involve fever or cause dehydration.

Preparing for Traveller’s Diarrhoea

Gastrointestinal illness is a common travel concern. Good hygiene and hydration are central. A clinician may need to assess severe, persistent or concerning symptoms. Our Private Prescribing service can discuss appropriate travel medicines following clinical assessment, without assuming antibiotics or other medicines are necessary.

Your Itinerary Matters

Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, Punjab, Agra, Varanasi, Himalayan regions and rural areas can involve different travel-health considerations. A beach holiday in Goa, a family visit to Punjab and a trek in the Himalayas can have very different travel-health considerations.
