Which Vaccinations Might I Need for Vietnam?

There is not one standard vaccine list for every traveller. Recommendations can depend on areas visited, urban or rural travel, duration, accommodation, activities, food and water or animal exposure, season where relevant, medical history, previous vaccinations and neighbouring countries. We use current authoritative UK travel-health guidance for an individual assessment.

Are Your Routine Vaccinations Up to Date?

Routine UK vaccination status should be reviewed as part of travel preparation, before destination-specific options are considered. Bring any vaccination history you have so we can discuss it in the context of your trip.

Vietnam Travel Vaccination Options

Current UK travel-health guidance and an individual assessment may indicate consideration of these options. They are not required by every traveller.

Hepatitis A

Protects against a viral infection generally acquired through contaminated food or water. It may be relevant depending on itinerary, prior vaccination and individual risk.

Typhoid

Protects against a bacterial infection associated with contaminated food or water. Consideration can depend on travel style, destination and likely exposure.

Hepatitis B

Protects against a virus spread through blood and body fluids. Longer stays, certain activities, healthcare exposure and other risks can matter.

Rabies

Protects against a serious infection transmitted through animal bites, scratches and certain exposures. Activities, duration and access to medical care are relevant.

Japanese encephalitis

Protects against a mosquito-borne viral infection. Rural exposure, destination, season, accommodation, activities and duration can affect consideration.

Hepatitis A and Vietnam

Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water. Vaccination may form part of a travel-health assessment, which considers your itinerary, food and water exposure, previous vaccines and personal circumstances.

Do I Need Typhoid Vaccination for Vietnam?

Typhoid is generally acquired through contaminated food or water. Whether vaccination is appropriate depends on individual risk and current guidance. It does not replace sensible food, water and hand-hygiene precautions.

Backpacking Through Vietnam?

Backpacking can involve longer stays, changing accommodation, rural areas, motorbike travel, flexible routes, animal exposure and onward travel into neighbouring countries. These can all affect a travel-health assessment, so bring your full planned route.

Do I Need Malaria Tablets for Vietnam?

Malaria risk is not the same throughout Vietnam and can vary by geographical area and itinerary. Some travellers may need mosquito-bite precautions without antimalarial medication, while other itineraries may warrant medicine according to current guidance. Bring your detailed itinerary for a personalised assessment.

Mosquito Protection Matters in Vietnam

Malaria is not the only reason to prevent bites: mosquitoes can also transmit illnesses such as dengue. Use an appropriate insect repellent, wear suitable clothing, use accommodation protection and take daytime as well as night-time precautions where relevant. Do not rely on unsupported alternative repellents.

Rabies and Animal Exposure in Vietnam

Avoid unnecessary contact with dogs, cats, monkeys, bats and other mammals. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination may be considered according to duration, activities, animal exposure, rural travel and access to appropriate medical care. Pre-travel vaccination does not remove the need for urgent medical assessment after a bite, scratch or other significant exposure.

Animal Bite or Scratch While Travelling?

Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek appropriate medical advice promptly while abroad. Do not wait until you return to the UK. A clinician must assess the exposure and any post-exposure treatment required.

Do I Need Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination?

Japanese encephalitis vaccination is not automatic for every traveller. A short city-based holiday and an extended rural trip can have different risk profiles. Assessment considers duration, rural travel, activities, season, accommodation and your specific itinerary.

Enjoy Vietnam’s Food – Reduce Your Risk of Illness

Enjoy local food while using practical precautions: clean hands regularly, choose drinking water carefully, consider food preparation and stay alert to dehydration. Vaccination does not remove food and water risks. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, bloody, involve fever or cause dehydration.

Planning to Travel Vietnam by Motorbike?

Road traffic injuries are an important travel risk. Plan practical safety measures before you leave, including suitable protective equipment, travel insurance and an understanding of local conditions. Discuss your route as part of broader travel-health preparation.

Travelling Beyond Vietnam?

Many journeys combine Vietnam with Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia or other destinations. Vaccination and malaria recommendations may change when countries or rural regions are added, so give us your entire itinerary.
