Common Symptoms of a UTI

Symptoms that may be associated with a urinary tract infection can include:

  • Burning or pain when passing urine
  • Needing to pass urine more frequently
  • A sudden urgency to pass urine
  • Passing small amounts of urine frequently
  • Cloudy urine
  • Lower abdominal discomfort

These symptoms can have other causes. This page cannot diagnose a UTI, so an individual assessment is needed.

Could You Be Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First?

Uncomplicated urinary tract infection is one of the conditions covered by NHS Pharmacy First for eligible women aged 16 to 64 years. The pharmacist will also consider symptoms and other clinical factors under the current NHS pathway.

If you meet the Pharmacy First criteria, you may be assessed through the NHS service rather than needing to pay for a private consultation. If you do not meet the NHS pathway criteria, this does not automatically mean private prescription treatment is suitable; the pharmacist will determine the appropriate clinical route.

UTI Treatment Options

The appropriate approach depends on your symptoms, clinical assessment, relevant medical history and current clinical guidance. Some UTIs may need prescription treatment, while other presentations may need a different approach or referral.

Where prescription treatment is clinically appropriate, our pharmacist will discuss the appropriate option with you. We do not recommend requesting a particular antibiotic.

When You May Need Further Medical Assessment

Some symptoms or circumstances need assessment by another healthcare service rather than a routine private consultation. This can include:

  • Symptoms suggesting a more serious infection, significant fever or feeling systemically unwell
  • Pain in the back or flank area, vomiting, or significant deterioration
  • Pregnancy, recurrent or complicated urinary symptoms
  • Blood in the urine requiring further assessment
  • People outside the appropriate clinical pathway

This is not an exhaustive list. Contact your GP, NHS 111 or urgent care for prompt advice when needed. Call 999 for a medical emergency.
