There is no single vaccine list appropriate for every visitor. A typical short holiday to Bali can have different considerations from backpacking, longer stays, rural travel, visiting several Indonesian islands, adventure travel, staying with local communities or travelling elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Recommendations are based on an individual assessment and current authoritative UK travel-health guidance.
Indonesia is geographically large and travel-health risks can vary significantly by destination. Someone staying in a Bali resort may have a very different assessment from someone travelling through several islands or remote and rural areas. Tell us everywhere you’re travelling – not just the airport you’re flying into.
Routine UK vaccination status should be reviewed as part of travel preparation, before destination-specific options are considered. Bring any vaccination history you have so it can be discussed in the context of your trip.
Current UK travel-health guidance and an individual assessment may indicate consideration of the following options. They are not needed by every traveller.
A viral infection generally spread through contaminated food or water. It may be relevant depending on itinerary, prior vaccination and individual risk.
A bacterial infection associated with contaminated food or water. Travel style, destination and likely exposure can affect whether it is considered.
A virus spread through blood and body fluids. Longer stays, some activities, healthcare exposure and other risks may be relevant.
A serious infection transmitted through bites, scratches and certain animal exposures. Duration, activities and access to care can matter.
A mosquito-borne viral infection. Rural exposure, destination, season, accommodation, activities and duration affect consideration.
Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water. Vaccination may be considered after a travel-health assessment of your itinerary, food and water exposure, previous vaccines and personal circumstances.
Book a Travel ConsultationTyphoid risk assessment depends on itinerary and individual circumstances. Vaccination does not replace practical food, water and hand-hygiene precautions.
Animal exposure is an important consideration for travellers. Avoid unnecessary contact with dogs, cats, monkeys, bats and other mammals. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination may be considered for some travellers according to activities, length of stay, planned animal contact, remote travel and access to medical care.
Book a Travel ConsultationMonkeys may be encountered at tourist sites. Do not deliberately touch or feed them, avoid encouraging contact for photographs, keep food appropriately secured and follow local safety instructions. Bites or scratches need prompt medical attention.
Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek appropriate medical assessment promptly while abroad. Do not wait until returning to the UK. Pre-travel rabies vaccination does not remove the need for medical assessment after a potential exposure.
Malaria risk can vary significantly across Indonesia. Do not assume a recommendation for Bali applies to every island or region. Our pharmacist will assess exact destinations, overnight locations, rural travel, trip duration, current malaria guidance and individual clinical factors.
Get a Personalised Malaria AssessmentPreventing mosquito bites remains important even where malaria medication is not indicated, because mosquitoes can transmit illnesses such as dengue. Use an appropriate insect repellent, wear suitable clothing, use accommodation protection and take daytime and night-time precautions where relevant. Do not rely on unsupported alternative repellents.
Japanese encephalitis vaccination is not routinely appropriate for every short-term tourist. Assessment can depend on areas visited, rural exposure, trip duration, season, activities and accommodation.
“Bali belly” is a commonly used term for traveller’s diarrhoea or gastrointestinal illness. Wash hands, use sensible food and water precautions, stay hydrated and use oral rehydration where appropriate. Seek medical assessment for severe, persistent or concerning symptoms, including dehydration, fever or blood in stool. Antibiotics are not routinely required.
Enjoy local food while using practical precautions: clean hands regularly, choose drinking water carefully, consider food preparation and stay alert to dehydration. No vaccination eliminates the need for sensible food and water precautions.
Backpackers may take longer trips with flexible routes, multiple islands, rural locations, basic accommodation, greater animal or mosquito exposure and neighbouring-country travel. These factors can change vaccination and malaria recommendations. Bring your complete itinerary.
Book a Backpacking Travel ConsultationSurfing, diving, hiking, scooter or motorbike travel and remote-island trips each benefit from practical preparation. Consider activity-appropriate safety equipment, reliable travel insurance, sun and hydration protection, and access to care when planning your route.
Road traffic injuries are a significant travel risk. Plan sensible safety measures before leaving, including suitable protective equipment, travel insurance and an understanding of local conditions. Travel-health preparation extends beyond vaccinations.
Many travellers combine Indonesia with Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore or other destinations. Vaccination and malaria recommendations can change with your complete itinerary, so share all destinations and relevant stopovers.
